AI Writing Tool

Core Idea

An AI-assisted writing tool framed not as a writing assistant but as a solo tabletop RPG experience — where the user participates in and influences the story, while the AI plays the role of GM, pushing back and guiding the narrative.

State of Thinking

The framing is the insight: most AI writing tools position the AI as a helper to the writer. This flips it — the AI is the GM, the user is the player. The story emerges from that tension.

The open question is which RPG system best supports this dynamic. The intuition is that Fate system’s narrative-first, flexible mechanics suit AI storytelling better than combat-heavy systems like D&D 5e or Dragon Age, which were built for structured encounters rather than participatory story creation.

Still very early — the framing feels right but nothing has been tested yet.

Thinking Trace

  • Noticed that existing AI writing tools feel passive — they assist but don’t push back or create genuine tension
  • The solo TTRPG analogy clicked as a better mental model — the player has agency but the GM creates resistance and surprise
  • Fate system came to mind because it is narrative-driven and mechanics-light — less about combat rules, more about story beats and character aspects
  • D&D 5e and Dragon Age feel wrong for this — they are built around encounters and combat resolution, not participatory storytelling
  • Have not tested any of this yet — purely conceptual at this stage

Evidence / Signals

  • Solo TTRPG as a genre already exists and has a dedicated audience — proves appetite for structured solo narrative experiences
  • Fate system has been used in narrative-first contexts before — not just a combat engine

Open Questions

  • Does the Fate system actually translate well to AI interaction, or is this just an intuition?
  • What does the actual product look like — a web app, a chat interface, something else?
  • How much system structure does the AI need to maintain narrative coherence over a long session?
  • Is the target user a writer, a gamer, or someone else entirely?
  • Are there existing tools already doing this — what is the current landscape?
